It is almost impossible to drive anywhere today without seeing at least one accident on the road.

There is a simple solution to accidents: Don't be distracted while driving.

It is alarming how many of these accidents are fatal. More than 40,000 Americans died on the roads in 2016. This is the most significant increase in deaths over a two year period in more than 50 years according to the National Safety Council.

car Perhaps you have someone you love that has been known to text and drive, eat and drive or is just distracted behind the wheel, these 10 tips can help them and others on the road stay alive.

  1. Avoid reaching. If items fall while driving, pull over to the side of the road if it is needed right then. Otherwise, let it lie where it falls and get it later.
  2. Set rules for your vehicle. Consider restricting passengers if it is known that having too many people in the vehicle is distracting. Ensure everyone wears seat belts. Have someone in charge of music and temperature so the driver can focus on driving.
  3. Speak up. If you see someone texting or being distracted while driving, tell them. Encourage yoru children to do the same if they are passengers in another person’s car. It could save a life.
  4. Plan your route before you go. Always program your navigation system before you put your car into gear. Or best yet, have your passenger do it for you and listen to the audio commands or have your rider tell you where to go before the twists and turns of the road appear.
  5. Keep kids and pets safe. Ensure children are in proper car seats or are following the height and weight restrictions of you state and have your animals in kennels if at all possible. This keeps them from roaming freely in the vehicle and if in an accident, they are more likely to survive if thrown from the vehicle.
  6. Talk to your employer. Ensure your clients or employer know that you can not respond to text or take calls for work while on the road.
  7. Don’t be the distraction. Don’t call others when you know they are driving.
  8. Set a good example. Demonstrate attentive driving. Avoid texting, eating, grooming, or calling someone when you are behind the wheel.
  9. Vow not to multitask. I know it is hard. You have much to do! Be hyper focused on not doing anything that occupies your mind or vision whild behind the wheel. You could even ask your passengers to turn off their phones or follow tip #10 too. This way you can have quality time with those who are in your car and have a good ‘ole conversation while you pay attention to the road.
  10. Stow your phone. Turning off the phone or putting it in “do not disturb” mode can help reaching for it at a red light or when you hear that texting noise. My favorite solution is to put your cell phone in your trunk. This way you can hear it if it rings or beeps but you can’t reach it. This way you will know you need to follow up, once you get where you are going.
