Between now and January 6, 2018 it looks like Colorado could have some snow and weather that is down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit.   Though there is not a lot of snow in the 2-week forecast, I can promise you one thing, it is coming. So let’s prepare now.

rainy road Here are some winter driving tips to keep you safe on the road:

  • Avoid driving while you are fatigued. Get rested before you get on the winter roads.
  • Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage.
  • Make certain your tires are properly inflated or go have them checked at your local tire store.
  • Neverl mix radial tires with other types of tires.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-up and to keep your gas pump healthy.
  • Avoid using your parking break in cold, rainy or snowy weather.
  • Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface such as wet, sand or ice.
  • Always look and steer where you want to go
  • Use your seat belt every time you get in your vehicle.

  Driving in snow? Here are some tips to keep you safe:

  • Accelerate and decelerate slowly. This will help you regain traction and avoid skids. Take time to slow down for a stop light. As a rule, remember it takes longer to stop on icy and snowy roads. Everything takes longer – accelerating, stopping, turning, so give yourself time to maneuver correctly.
  • Following distance should be increased from 3-4 seconds to 8-10 seconds.
  • Know your brakes. The best way to stop is threshold braking, whether you have antilock brakes or not. Keep your heel on the floor and use the ball of your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal.
  • Leave earlier. We all try to do that “one last thing” but it is not worth rushing on winter roads.
  • Don’t stop if you can avoid it. It is best to move slowly up to a stop light than to rush up to it and stop quickly. It is best to keep your car rolling if you can.
  • Never stop going up a hill. There is nothing worse than trying to move up a hill (or driveway) on icy cement.
  • Stay home. If you really don’t have to go out, don’t. You might be a great driver on winter roads but that doesn’t mean everyone else is. If you don’t have to be somewhere, enjoy the winter weather from the indoors.
