Let’s face it, it is so easy to be distracted while driving. It is also just as easy to set up some rules to follow any time you get behind the wheel. Most people are in such a rush today to get where they are going and their calendar are so full, they may not just be taking the time to breathe and educate themselves, or the others in their household, on how to be safe behind the wheel.

Distracted driving is dangerous and a common thing you probably witness every time you get behind the wheel of your vehicle.

Cell phones and texting are part of the problem but anything that diverts attention from driving presents a risk.   There is something you can do though. Help change social norms around driving.   Texting Texting and driving are a disastrous combination. Most people think they are only taking their eyes off the road for a second.   Some good things to implement for all the drivers in your sphere of influence are:

  • Store your cell phone in the back seat or trunk so you are not tempted to use it. If you have to use it for any reason, use voice commands or Siri to do the hand work for you.
  • Have a rule to only eat or drink while your car is stopped or you are not in it. This also keeps your vehicle clean.
  • Ensure your passengers know you getting them to your destination safely in your number one priority.
  • Get ready for your day or after your workout at home or the gym. Never in a moving vehicle.
  • Reading on the road is just simply unwise, don’t do it.
  • Program your GPS or smartphone before your wheels start rolling. You can also write down your mileage before you turn your keys over.
  • Have a passenger be in control of the music or just let what is on play. Use your steering wheel controls if you have them.
