Water damage is the leading cause of loss for most homeowners. Winter always brings challenges with it, especially when it is freezing cold outside.   As temperatures drop below freezing outside your home, water inside pipers can freeze and expand causing increased pressure. Sometimes this may lead to bursting pipes.

  • Inspect exposed pipes in exterior walls, basements, crawl spaces and attics. Your local plumber or handyman can install properly fitting insulating sleeves easily.
  • Examine the area around piper for air leaks. Seal them with caulk or insulation to keep the cold air out.
  • Hire a thermographer to look for potential gaps in insulation near pipes. *Note: This is complimentary service to eligible Nationwide Private Client policy holders where available.
  • If you are traveling in the winter, you might consider turning off the water to your house.
  • An automatic water shut-off valve is the best way to protect your home from water damage.
  • Consider installing an emergency electrical generator. This will operate your home’s heating system if the power fails during winter storms.
  • Keep your thermostat set at no less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Run hot and cold water faucets at a slow drop to keep the flow of water moving.
  • Leave cabinet doors open to allow heat to reach pipes located under sinks in kitchen and bathroon.
  • Turn off the water to outside fixtures such as garden hoses, irrigation systems and outdoor showers.

  If a pipe should burst:

  • Turn off the water main immediately.
  • Contact a water mitigation company. If you don’t know one, our office would be happy to make a recommendation.
  • Do not attempt to thaw frozen pipes with an open flame. Call a licensed plumber or water mitigation company for recommendations on the safest ways to thaw pipes.
